Practical Programs for the Early Learning Educator

All early childhood educators want to run exciting sessions that children love — where they can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next. You don’t need to write music lesson plans all on your own. Last year alone Musical Child helped 1,100 educators deliver music programs to 33,000 kids.

Can you relate to any of these 5 concerns?

  1. “I know music is important because I keep seeing articles about it and hearing about the benefits of music for children’s brain development at staff meetings. But I just don’t know where to begin.”
  2. “Nobody ever taught me how to do music properly in my training. We just made instruments and sang a few action songs. And what’s more I can’t even sing very well!”
  3. “I keep repeating the same tired songs and activities because I already know them. I’m bored and I know that affects my children’s engagement. I want music that helps their language development – that would inspire me too.”
  4. “I know that playing instruments is important for hand coordination, group cohesion and development of rhythm, but when I try to do instrument activities, the kids just get loud and the other educators complain about the noise coming from my room”.
  5. “Sometimes when I teach kids music, they don’t always respond, they just look at me and I wonder if they don’t understand. Are they shy, or just don’t want to learn what I’ve got for them. Keeping their attention is hard, I don’t know exactly what to do.”

This is the kind of thing we hear all the time from early childhood educators. And that’s why we tested our programs in childcare centres and preschools to see if they were successful with just the educators in the room and no parents there to help. Guess what, they worked! So we published 8 programs for educators just like you. We know you don’t have the time, or maybe the expertise, to research and write music programs all on your own.

No musical training required to get started

You don’t need to read music to understand these programs. They’re written in plain English and they’re practical. There’s so much material in each lesson plan that even if one of the ten activities doesn’t engage you or your children, you can quickly change to the next because it’s all there in front of you. What’s more you have all the music to support you. If you want you can sing live to your kids using the backing tracks – no high voices required. Or, if you don’t want to sing for any particular reason, you can use the vocal tracks to give you a ‘virtual music teacher’ right in your room.

Watch the kids take control of their own learning

We’ve seen educators who were resistant to singing, moving and playing instruments become confident, competent and happy within 3 months of using the Musical Child approach. The surprising thing is that the children take less than a month to know what happens next in the lesson and what they supposed to do! We’ve seen toddlers happily pack away their instruments and go and get a scarf to tuck into their pants to become a horse because they know that the horse song follows the instrument song, all without being told. And we’ve had three year-olds ask us if we were leaving early today because we used a picture book near the beginning of the preschool lesson. They had already learned that the story song was the final activity, and that was after only one lesson a fortnight on our fourth visit. Adults are amazed! This is because when you run music sessions regularly and often, you provide the conditions for a child to flourish and manage their own learning. Music makes children happy and having a music program where they know what happens next is a sure-fire way to unleash that happiness. Even if you only do one music session a week, after 3 weeks they understand what to do and then they start to surprise you with their innate musical creativity. They enjoy a good jam session just like any other musician.

What are other Early Childhood Educators saying?

‘As a ‘non-musical’ early learning educator, Musical Child has helped me enormously!!! It is a great way to easily increase my repertoire of songs (after doing this for many years, new songs are a lifesaver!).  The songs come with really good information about the importance of singing, musical, rhythm and rhyme and what children and parents are learning as they enjoy singing.  The site is very user friendly and the downloads have never been a problem. Love Musical Child!’

‘Musical Child is awesome — children are responding really well to the songs and music and it is enjoyable for me too.’

‘I am an Early Years Educator and taught music (keyboard/piano) from home when my children were school age.

I have been trying to write my own programs for work but don’t want to breach any copyright laws, or plagiarize other people’s ideas, so was totally stoked when I found your plans.

I have adapted them to suit my instrument playing, and also my slightly off-key singing style.

Your lesson plans have everything I need, and cover all the age groups I work with, as well as incorporating all the expectations, requirements and outcomes from the EYLF (Early Years Learning Framework).

The lessons plans are fabulous and have saved me so much time, and I can’t wait to purchase them all!
